The knowledge of danger signs of obstetric complications among women in rural India: evaluating an integrated microfinance and health literacy program

Summary. A program combining microfinance self-help groups with maternal health education in rural Uttar Pradesh increased women's knowledge of obstetric danger signs by 27 percent. The program also created spillover effects, spreading knowledge from participating women to non-members in the same villages. Results held across different socioeconomic groups, suggesting the health messages reached women uniformly regardless of their background or access to health services.
