Resource Assessment and Optimal Sizing of Off-Grid Standalone Photovoltaic (SPV) System for Rural Communities in Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia
Summary. This paper assesses solar energy potential across six locations in Ethiopia's Amhara region and designs off-grid photovoltaic systems for rural communities without grid electricity access. The region receives 6.46 kWh/m²/day of solar irradiation. A typical household system costs 97,941 ETB upfront with 61,770 ETB in lifetime maintenance and battery replacement, achieving a 13-year payback period. The analysis confirms standalone solar systems are financially viable and can reliably meet rural energy demand.
