Status and Benefits of Renewable Energy Technologies in the Rural Areas of Ethiopia: A Case Study on Improved Cooking Stoves and Biogas Technologies

Yitayal Addis Alemayehu · 2015 · International Journal of Renewable Energy Development

Summary. Ethiopia's rural population relies heavily on biomass for energy, causing deforestation and health problems. The government has distributed 3.7 million improved cooking stoves and installed over 860 biogas digesters to replace traditional fuels. These technologies conserve forests and provide environmental benefits, but current programs fail to reach the rural households they target. Greater focus on rural distribution is needed to address fuel scarcity, environmental degradation, and health issues.
