Studying Discourse Innovations: The Case of the Indigenous Movement in Ecuador

Summary. Ecuador's indigenous movement underwent major discursive innovation in the 1970s and 1980s by reframing indigenous peoples as nationalities entitled to self-determination and autonomy. This conceptual shift introduced demands for plurinational and intercultural state reorganization, fundamentally reshaping national political discourse and giving the movement lasting influence in Ecuadorian politics.
