A critical review of the follow-the-innovation approach: Stakeholder collaboration and agricultural innovation development
Summary. Smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa rarely adopt science-based agricultural innovations despite their potential benefits. This paper reviews the Follow the Innovation approach, a participatory framework that brings together scientists, extension workers, local communities, and other stakeholders to develop agricultural innovations collaboratively. The authors argue that innovation requires broader definition as a multi-stakeholder outcome and identify five key joint tasks necessary for success in complex agricultural environments.
