From Energy Access to Agricultural Resilience: Determinants and Economic Impacts of Solar-Powered Irrigation Adoption among Smallholder Farmers in Southwestern Nigeria ( JOURNAL OF AGRICULTURAL & RURAL DEVELOPMENT An International Peer-Reviewed Journal on Agricultural Economics & Tech Innovation )
Summary. Solar-powered irrigation systems dramatically improve smallholder farming in southwestern Nigeria. The study of 850 farmers found that capital constraints and credit access are the main barriers to adoption, while extension services and farmer groups drive uptake. Farmers who adopt solar irrigation increase dry-season yields by 78%, cut energy costs by 86%, and boost annual farm income by 75%. The research recommends financing innovations and institutional support to scale clean energy adoption across African smallholder agriculture.
