An innovation in Australian dental education: rural, remote and Indigenous pre-graduation placements
Summary. Western Australia's dental school created a rural placement program for final-year students to address shortages of dental services in remote areas. Between 2002 and 2005, the program placed 78 students in supervised clinical practice in rural and Indigenous settings. Student evaluations enabled continuous program improvements. Early data suggests the placements may influence graduates to practice in rural locations, potentially helping build Australia's rural dental workforce.
