Narratives of Renewable Energy in Rural Alberta: Exploring the (In)Visibility of New Infrastructures

Anna Bettini · 2025 · Anthropologica

Summary. Rural Albertans respond to visible renewable energy infrastructure—solar panels and wind turbines—with mixed reactions shaped by concerns about landscape change, agricultural impacts, and who controls these projects. The paper uses ethnographic research to show how the visibility of renewable energy contrasts with hidden fossil fuel infrastructure, revealing power dynamics and justice issues central to energy transitions. Local voices expose tensions between promised financial benefits and community anxieties about place and livelihoods.
