Adoption of innovation in agriculture: a critical review of economic and psychological models
Summary. This review examines two competing frameworks for understanding why farmers adopt agricultural innovations: utility maximization and planned behavior theory. Analyzing 36 studies, the authors find that utility maximization models produce inconsistent and mostly insignificant results across variables. Planned behavior theory models show stronger correlations between psychological constructs, but lack consistency because most variables appear in only one or two studies, preventing clear patterns from emerging.
