Summary. Rural Ethiopia lacks electricity access for 80% of its population. Off-grid solar photovoltaic systems are economically viable there due to excellent solar conditions and high oil prices, with payback periods of 2-4 years. The paper presents a solar electrification roadmap including demonstration projects, training programs, and local solar businesses that generate purchasing power and enable sustainable rural development.
