Embedded models of rural entrepreneurship: The case of pubs in Cumbria, North West of England

Summary. Rural pubs in Cumbria have declined sharply, damaging community networks and local employment. This study examines why pubs fail and succeed through interviews with owners, managers, and customers. The authors find that pubs function as critical community hubs providing social connection and business opportunities. They conclude that stronger involvement from local communities and public sector support is essential to preserve these rural assets.
