RURALITY MATTERS: UNDERSTANDING THE CRITICAL AND NUANCED ROLE OF PLACE-BASED FACTORS IN RURAL AGING
Summary. Rural Americans comprise 22% of the nation's older adults but remain understudied in gerontology. This symposium presents five research projects examining how place-based factors shape aging outcomes in rural communities. Studies analyze service organization distribution, aging-in-place challenges and assets, rural-urban caregiver differences, health disparities across diverse populations, and healthcare access measurement methods. The research identifies culturally appropriate interventions and policy strategies to support rural older adults and their caregivers.
