Transit Safety of Women in Rural-Urban Contexts
Summary. Young women experience sexual harassment and transit crime that restricts their mobility and public participation. A survey of Swedish railway passengers in 2022 found that young women face higher victimization rates than older women. Rural women report feeling safer than urban women but take more precautions before traveling, such as avoiding certain stations or traveling with companions at night. The research calls for gender and age-sensitive mobility policies that address women's safety needs in rural contexts.
