Entrepreneurship development and entrepreneurial orientation in rural areas in Malawi

Summary. Rural entrepreneurs in Malawi show positive attitudes and intentions toward business despite operating mainly at subsistence income-generating levels. Poverty, low education, and lack of management skills constrain entrepreneurship practice. Education and training significantly improve entrepreneurial activity, while access to finance does not affect entrepreneurial intentions. Existing support models fail to translate entrepreneurial orientation into economic growth, requiring new practical frameworks tailored to rural economies.
