Local and scientific knowledges in a place-based sustainability education program: Effects on undergraduates’ connection to a rural area in Hong Kong
Summary. Urban undergraduates in Hong Kong developed stronger connections to a rural area and deeper understanding of sustainability challenges through field trips guided by both a conservationist and a local fisher. The conservationist's expertise built students' grasp of ecological dimensions, while the fisher's lived experience exposed them to cultural, social, and economic complexities. Combining these perspectives helped students recognize tensions between conservation, heritage preservation, livelihoods, and development.
