‘Spatializing’ knowledge communities: towards a conceptualization of transnational innovation networks

Neil M. Coe, Timothy G. Bunnell · 2003 · Global Networks

Summary. This paper argues that innovation systems research should shift focus from discrete geographic scales to network relationships operating across scales. The authors propose that innovation networks extend beyond firms to include knowledge communities and the movement of knowledgeable individuals. They develop a conceptual framework identifying three domains of transnational innovation networks: corporate-institutional, social network, and hegemonic-discursive, showing how these domains interact across different localities.
