Entrepreneurship, Broadband, and Gender: Evidence from Establishment Births in Rural America
Summary. Broadband access significantly increases business formation rates in rural America, with the strongest effects on nonemployer businesses, women-led enterprises, and remote establishments. The study uses instrumental variable methods to show that broadband enables rural entrepreneurs—particularly women—to reach nontraditional markets without physical storefronts, overcoming the constraints of thin local markets.
