Modernisation in agriculture: what makes a farmer adopt an innovation?
Summary. This study identifies factors that influence farmers' decisions to adopt agricultural innovations. Using data from 865 Dutch farms, the researchers found that farmers with more labor resources, stronger market positions, and better access to information adopt innovations more readily. Past adoption behavior also predicts future adoption. Conversely, higher debt levels and greater market regulation reduce adoption rates. The analysis distinguishes between widely diffused, emerging, and entirely new innovations.
