Review: Anticipating alternative trajectories for responsible Agriculture 4.0 innovation in livestock systems
Summary. Digital technologies are transforming livestock farming through data collection, automation, and compliance monitoring. This review examines Agriculture 4.0 trajectories using a Futures Triangle approach, finding that previous visions favored either technological optimism or pessimism. The authors argue that responsible Agriculture 4.0 requires balanced collaboration among policymakers, farmers, consumers, and technology developers, with built-in anticipatory processes to critically evaluate technological pathways and their sustainability and animal welfare outcomes.
