The density of microfinance institutions and multiple borrowing in Ghana: Are rural borrowers vulnerable?

Summary. This study examines multiple borrowing patterns in Ghana, finding that 35% of borrowers use multiple microfinance institutions simultaneously. While higher density of MFIs reduces multiple borrowing overall, rural borrowers show greater vulnerability to overlapping loans and respond differently to various institutional features. The findings highlight how MFI expansion affects client sustainability and economic wellbeing.
