Self-employment and entrepreneurship in urban and rural labour markets
Summary. Self-employment, business creation, and innovation correlate strongly in urban areas but not in rural areas. Rural workers become self-employed more often in weak labour markets, yet this doesn't translate to entrepreneurship. When accounting for local labour market conditions, the rural gap disappears. The findings suggest self-employment in rural areas reflects necessity rather than genuine entrepreneurship, unlike in cities where these measures align.
