Design Model of Seaweed Bank as an Alternative to Rural Microfinance Institutions
Summary. A seaweed bank model combines cooperative and banking principles, accepting dried seaweed as deposits instead of cash. Tested over four seasons with 300 farmers in Indonesia, the model generated $433 annual revenue per farmer and $107,161 total. During lean seasons, farmers accessed seaweed reserves instead of borrowing from patrons, reducing debt dependency while building village savings of $199,239.
