Summary. This study examines what builds a firm's potential absorptive capacity—the ability to identify and assimilate external knowledge. Firms invest more in building this capacity during major internal changes. The research shows that potential absorptive capacity creates competitive advantage in innovation when firms have strong internal knowledge flows.
