The Impact of “Broadband China” Policy on Rural Household Consumption

Summary. China's "Broadband China" policy, implemented between 2013 and 2021, significantly decreased rural household consumption overall, with particularly strong negative effects on low-income families and workers with low skills. Using difference-in-differences analysis on official rural household data, the study reveals that broadband expansion reduced rather than expanded domestic consumption demand in rural areas.
