Integrated passenger-freight services in rural demand-responsive Transit: evidence from a case study
Summary. Rural transport systems typically operate passengers and freight separately, wasting vehicle capacity and raising costs. This study models how integrating parcel handling into demand-responsive transit affects both operating costs and passenger travel times. A case study in China demonstrates that coordinated passenger-freight services reduce fleet size and total costs while keeping passenger delays modest, revealing conditions where integration delivers the strongest benefits for rural transport.
