Place-based education avant la lettre. The shifting emphasis on connecting the curriculum to the place in Austrian rural school reform, 1919–1965
Summary. Austrian rural schools from 1919 to 1965 emphasized connecting curriculum to local place and community life. This practice declined around 1960 not because educators rejected it, but because new policy perspectives made it invisible. The analysis reveals that place-based education risks embedding local values into schooling, making the approach vulnerable to abandonment when policy priorities shift.
