Place-Based Stewardship Education: Nurturing Aspirations to Protect the Rural Commons

Summary. Place-based stewardship education in rural Michigan schools significantly increased middle school students' environmental sensitivity, responsible behaviors, community attachment, and civic confidence. Students developed stronger identification with their communities and commitment to protecting local natural resources. The program successfully linked classroom learning to collective environmental action, expanding students' aspirations to contribute meaningfully to their communities' futures.
