The role of broadband adoption/use in the survival and growth of food and drink micro-businesses in remote-rural Scotland
Summary. Food and drink micro-businesses in remote-rural Scotland face specific barriers and drivers in adopting broadband. Researchers surveyed 141 restaurants and interviewed 42 owners, finding that bookings, customer use, transactions, and security drive adoption, while limited internet service provider options and restaurant location create barriers. The study develops a Broadband Adoption Framework and recommends policy changes to ensure rural businesses can access broadband effectively and reduce the digital divide.
