Optimization and Cost Analysis of an Off-Grid Hybrid Power System for Rural Electrification: A Case Study of Pawi District, Ethiopia

Endris Muhammed Hassen, Onur Akar, Ümit Kemalettin Terzi · 2026 · European Journal of Technic

Summary. This study designs and optimizes an off-grid hybrid power system combining solar, wind, diesel, and battery storage to electrify a rural district in Ethiopia. Using genetic algorithm optimization, the researchers compared four system configurations and found their approach achieved lower energy costs and unmet load than conventional HOMER software modeling, making renewable hybrid systems more viable for rural electrification.
