Optimizing off-grid PV/wind systems with battery and water storage for rural energy and water access

Misagh Irandoostshahrestani, Daniel R. Rousse · 2025 · Journal of Energy Storage

Summary. This paper develops an optimization framework for off-grid renewable energy systems combining solar panels, wind turbines, batteries, and water storage to serve rural communities. The system uses an energy management algorithm and genetic optimization to balance electricity supply, water access, and costs. A case study in Quebec demonstrates the system can reliably power homes and pump water while reducing diesel dependence, with payback periods of 8–12 years and electricity costs of 16–23 cents per kilowatt-hour.
