Broadband adoption and availability: Impacts on rural employment during COVID-19
Summary. During COVID-19 lockdowns in April and May 2020, rural U.S. counties with higher broadband availability and wired broadband adoption rates experienced significantly higher employment rates. Using two-stage least squares analysis while controlling for socioeconomic and demographic factors, the authors demonstrate that both broadband infrastructure and household adoption directly supported rural employment when work moved online.
