Does Microfinance Empower Rural Women? -a Empirical Study in Udaipur District, Rajasthan
Summary. A survey of 100 women in self-help groups across Udaipur district, Rajasthan found that microfinance programs significantly increased women's empowerment on average. However, social backwardness, indebtedness, and competing microcredit programs in nearby villages positively influenced women's participation rates, suggesting that disadvantage and limited alternatives drive enrollment rather than empowerment outcomes alone.
