RURALITY AND RACE IN WYOMING AND MISSISSIPPI: THE INTERSECTION OF PLACE AND RACE-BASED DISPARITIES

Taylor Jansen · 2024 · Innovation in Aging

Summary. Rural older adults in Wyoming and Mississippi experience distinct health disparities shaped by both geography and race. Wyoming's rural counties show better health outcomes despite fewer doctors and hospitals, but Native American reservation counties have the worst life expectancy, homicide rates, and COVID-19 mortality. In Mississippi, predominantly Black rural counties report worse health indicators and less healthcare access than predominantly White rural counties. Race and place together create compounded disadvantages for rural minorities.
