Place-based strengths and vulnerabilities for mental wellness among rural minority older adults: an intervention development study protocol

Elise Trott Jaramillo · 2024 · BMJ Open

Summary. Rural minority older adults in the United States face severe depression inequities driven by economic insecurity, trauma, transportation gaps, and limited service access. This study examines protective place-based factors like social support and community attachment alongside vulnerabilities among American Indian and Latinx older adults in New Mexico. Researchers will conduct surveys, interviews, and network analysis to understand how these factors shape depression experiences, then develop a community-driven intervention addressing place-based causes of mental health disparities.
