Unveiling determinants of household lighting preferences in rural Tanzania: insights for sustainable energy access

Aurelia Ngirwa Kamuzora · 2024 · Sustainable Energy Research

Summary. This study analyzes household lighting choices among 4,671 rural Tanzanian households using regression modeling. Older household heads and larger families are less likely to choose grid electricity. Married households prefer candles, while employed heads favor modern solutions. Higher income increases electricity and candle adoption but not solar energy uptake. The findings show that socio-economic factors—employment, income, education, and household composition—drive lighting technology choices and should guide policy efforts to expand sustainable energy access.
