Restructuring existing value networks to diffuse sustainable innovations in food packaging

Outi Keränen, Hanna Komulainen, Tuula Lehtimäki, Pauliina Ulkuniemi · 2020 · Industrial Marketing Management

Summary. Sustainable food packaging innovations struggle to reach markets because existing industry networks resist change. This study examines how value networks must restructure to enable diffusion of sustainable packaging made from agro-food waste. The research identifies necessary changes across firm, network, and macro levels: recognizing opportunities, integrating new actors and resources, building new relationships, creating supportive regulations, and stimulating market demand. Adopting sustainable packaging requires fundamental reorganization of entire value networks, not just product innovation.
