Integrating indigenous knowledge into agricultural research and development: a pathway to landrace preservation and food security
Summary. In Uganda, indigenous knowledge integration into agricultural research remains limited despite its potential to preserve landraces and ensure food security. Weak policies, negative researcher attitudes toward indigenous knowledge, and donor-driven research priorities obstruct integration efforts. Where integration occurs, it focuses narrowly on scientific applications while ignoring cultural dimensions, leaving landraces at risk of extinction. The study recommends policy reforms that prioritize indigenous knowledge in research agendas and budgets, alongside holistic approaches combining scientific and cultural aspects.
