A Review of Innovation Systems Framework as a Tool for Gendering Agricultural Innovations: Exploring Gender Learning and System Empowerment
Summary. This paper argues that innovation systems frameworks can effectively address gender issues in African agriculture by shifting focus from static gender analysis to dynamic gender learning within systems. The author contends that traditional gender approaches ignore the complex environments where gender roles operate. By treating agricultural innovation systems holistically—including extension services and multiple actors—practitioners can identify entry points for making innovations gender-sensitive and building system capacity rather than just empowering individual women.
