Research and Innovation Opportunities within Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS): A Transdisciplinary Imperative for Sustainable Development
Summary. Indigenous Knowledge Systems represent valuable, place-based understanding developed through long relationships between communities and their environments. This paper argues that integrating indigenous knowledge with scientific approaches creates better solutions for sustainability challenges including biodiversity, climate adaptation, medicine, water management, and governance. The paper outlines ethical frameworks for collaboration, emphasizing consent and intellectual property rights, and calls for research funding and education systems to support indigenous-led innovation that advances both sustainability and indigenous sovereignty.
