Ultrahigh‐Speed Fixed Broadband and Rural Development
Summary. This study examines whether ultrahigh-speed broadband (≥100 Mbps) reduces rural depopulation in Spain from 2013 to 2020. Using instrumental variable estimation to account for confounding factors, the researchers find no causal relationship between broadband expansion and population growth, despite observing a positive correlation. Improved telecommunications infrastructure alone does not reverse rural population decline.
