Open Innovation in Practice: An Analysis of Strategic Approaches to Technology Transactions

Ulrich Lichtenthaler · 2008 · IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management

Summary. This study surveyed 154 companies to identify how firms actually practice open innovation through technology transactions. The research reveals that companies pursue distinct strategic approaches by balancing two activities: acquiring external technology and commercializing their own technological knowledge. The findings show that open innovation operates as an integrated process rather than separate acquisition or exploitation activities, providing the first large-scale empirical picture of how firms strategically manage technology transactions across their innovation processes.
