Rural Living Labs: Inclusive Digital Transformation in the Countryside

Johanna Lindberg, Mari Runardotter, Yomn Elmistikawy, Anna Ståhlbröst, Diana Chronéer · 2021 · Technology Innovation Management Review

Summary. Rural areas lag behind cities in digital transformation research and implementation. This study develops a Rural Living Lab framework to support user-centered digitalization in sparsely populated regions. Based on the DigiBy project in northern Sweden, the authors identify five key components for designing digital transformation pilots: rural context, digitalization, governance and business models, facilitating methods, and multi-stakeholder engagement. The framework helps rural communities understand and apply digital opportunities for service development.
