Gendered mobilities and immobilities: Women’s and men’s capacities for agricultural innovation in Kenya and Nigeria

Johanna Bergman Lodin, Amare Tegbaru, Renee Bullock, Ann Degrande, Lilian Nkengla-Asi, H. I. M. Gaya · 2019 · Gender Place & Culture

Summary. Gender norms restrict women's mobility in Kenya and Nigeria, limiting their access to agricultural services and farmer groups compared to men. Women face constraints on where they can travel, when, and for how long. The study reveals that access to agricultural innovation networks often reflects gender role expectations rather than individual choice, creating time pressures that affect capacity to innovate. Interventions must address how norms and agency intersect to support equitable participation in agricultural innovation.
