Place of nature-based tourism in ecosystem services valuation in rural landscape

Summary. This study surveyed local inhabitants, stakeholders, and students in rural areas to rank ecosystem services by importance. Local residents prioritized provisioning services like food and water, while stakeholders and students valued cultural services more highly. Nature-based tourism emerged as a significant cultural ecosystem service for rural development. The authors conclude that cultural ecosystem services deserve greater attention in rural economic planning and that mapping culturally valuable places can help quantify economic benefits.
