Measuring urban and rural establishment innovation in the United States
Summary. Patents are commonly used to measure innovation, but this study tests whether they work equally well in rural and urban areas. Using data from nearly 11,000 U.S. establishments, researchers compared patents against 39 alternative innovation measures. They found that patents reliably capture innovation in urban areas but perform poorly for rural establishments. The study recommends using different measurement approaches depending on whether establishments are urban or rural.
