Relationship between Micro-Finance Development Loans and the Social-Economic Well-being of SACCO Members in Buhweju, Ibanda and Kamwenge Districts of Rural Uganda

Summary. This study examined whether microfinance development loans from SACCOs (savings and credit cooperatives) improved the socio-economic well-being of members in three rural Ugandan districts. Researchers surveyed SACCO members and found that development loans showed no significant relationship with improved well-being. Many members avoided loans due to fear of interest payments and repayment obligations. The study recommends SACCOs reduce interest rates to encourage uptake.
