Net Present Value (NPV) Analysis of Solar Microgrids for Off-Grid Rural Schools in the Philippines, integrating Carbon Credit Valuation and Sensitivity Analysis

Ireneo G. Mateo · 2026 · E3S Web of Conferences

Summary. Solar microgrids for five off-grid rural schools in the Philippines show negative net present value under current market conditions, making them economically unviable without subsidies. Carbon credits provide minimal financial benefit at current prices. Discount rates and capital costs are the key factors determining project viability. The study identifies a critical funding gap requiring government grants, green financing, and community ownership models to make renewable energy deployment financially sustainable in rural areas.
