Techno-Economic Analysis of Off-Grid Hybrid Renewable Energy System for Ethiopian Rural Electrification

Abiy Mekonnen, Ravikumar Hiremath, Dereje Shiferaw · 2025 · Green Energy and Environmental Technology

Summary. This study designs off-grid hybrid renewable energy systems for 180 rural Ethiopian communities using solar, wind, and micro-hydro resources. Researchers modeled three system configurations with HOMER software, analyzing costs and feasibility. Results show energy costs ranging from $0.043 to $0.14 per kilowatt-hour depending on resource availability and diesel hybridization. The proposed systems offer competitive pricing against Ethiopia's national tariff and provide a practical pathway for sustainable rural electrification.
