Revalorizing Indigenous Foods for Sustainable Diets: Integrated Policy, Value-Chain Innovation, and Implementation Science for Achieving Food and Nutrition Security
Summary. Indigenous foods offer significant potential to address malnutrition, climate vulnerability, and biodiversity loss through sustainable food systems. Systems-based interventions combining institutional procurement, agroecological production, and nutrition-sensitive value chains increase dietary diversity by 15–30%. The paper proposes an integrated model linking production through governance and identifies critical gaps in impact evaluation, cost-effectiveness analysis, and policy frameworks that must be addressed to scale indigenous food systems globally.
