Healthcare Access for Children in Kinship Care: Barriers, Enablers and Place‐Based Solutions in Rural Australia

Corina Modderman, Rachael Sanders · 2026 · Health & Social Care in the Community

Summary. Children in kinship care in rural Australia face significant barriers to healthcare access, including geographic isolation, systemic inequalities, and workforce pressures. Kinship carers bear disproportionate burdens navigating these barriers, especially for children with complex health needs. The study identifies that rural communities possess relational strengths that enable locally responsive solutions through place-based governance and cross-sector collaboration. Policy responses must address kinship-care-specific needs and partner with Aboriginal communities.
